RED January - Start 2025 with movement

RED January: Start Moving for a Brighter Mind!

January can sometimes feel like a long, grey slog. The festive season is over, the decorations are packed away, and we’re left staring down at a whole year ahead. But rather than diving back under the duvet, why not lace up your trainers and embrace RED January?

RED January—short for Rise Every Day—is a movement that encourages people to get active every day in January, whatever that might look like for you. Whether it’s a walk around the block, a full-blown workout, or a playful romp in the park with your dog (or borrowed pup, like our cheeky studio mascot, Henry!), the focus is on moving your body and lifting your spirits.

RED January began in 2016 as a way to encourage better mental health through regular movement. It started as a partnership with the mental health charity Mind and has since grown into a nationwide initiative. The idea is simple: create a daily habit of exercise, no matter how small, and reap the benefits for both your physical and mental health.

What’s brilliant about RED January is that it’s for everyone, not just marathon runners or gym enthusiasts. It reminds us that movement isn’t just for the elite or ultra-fit—it’s for you, me, and your neighbour who’s still in their Christmas jumper. Importantly, the message extends beyond January: the idea is to kickstart habits that you can carry on all year round. After all, mental health doesn’t have an off-season!

Why Daily Movement Matters

Did you know that even a brisk 10-minute walk can release endorphins, boost your mood, and reduce feelings of anxiety? Exercise is a proven way to improve mental health by reducing stress hormones like cortisol and increasing serotonin and dopamine—the feel-good chemicals your brain loves.

Take Jane, one of our clients, as an example. She started RED January last year by walking her Labrador, Max, every evening. By February, she noticed her sleep had improved, and she felt calmer and more productive during the day. Now, those evening walks are her favourite part of her routine—even in the rain!

RED January also highlights how movement creates community. Whether it’s joining a local Pilates class (shameless plug alert!) or convincing your best friend to join you for a jog, exercising together boosts motivation and strengthens relationships.

Make it Fun (Even Without a Dog!)

If you’re wondering where to start, think small and fun! You don’t need a gym membership or fancy gadgets—just a bit of creativity. Got five minutes? Stretch while the kettle boils. Need some fresh air? Take your neighbour’s dog for a stroll (Henry is available for cuddles but unfortunately not loanable).

And for those who do have a dog, they’re the ultimate exercise buddies. Whether they’re bounding after a ball or sniffing every blade of grass, they’ll get you out of the house and into nature—good for both of you!

Keep Moving and Stay Tuned

The beauty of RED January isn’t just in starting the year with a positive step—it’s in keeping those steps going.
