Take Control

Pilates Principles to get the most out of each class

Pilates is often described as “the art of controlled movement,” and the principle of Control highlights its essence.

Defined in The Pilates Method of Physical and Mental Conditioning, this principle ensures that every exercise is performed with precision and purpose, reducing the risk of injury and enhancing results. By mastering Control, we learn to move with deliberation and grace, building strength and stability.

Control - small, careful movements

Control in Pilates refers to the deliberate regulation of movement, ensuring that exercises are performed with precision and without momentum. This deliberate approach minimizes the risk of injury and maximizes the effectiveness of each exercise.

Class Focus Points:

Slow, Deliberate Movements: Perform exercises slowly, focusing on muscle engagement rather than speed. This control enhances strength and coordination.

Avoid Compensations: Be vigilant about not allowing other parts of the body to compensate during an exercise. For example, avoid using the neck muscles to assist in abdominal exercises.
